Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University Sustainable Green Campus Coordination Office
The Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University Sustainable Green Campus Coordination Office was established in 2019 to coordinate the development and implementation of the University’s sustainability policies, particularly in the areas of energy, water, waste, transportation, and environmental management. Today, our work continues through a holistic approach encompassing climate change mitigation and adaptation, the conservation of natural resources and biodiversity, the circular economy, sustainable transportation, education, research, and public awareness.
We view sustainability not simply as creating a greener campus, but as an institutional transformation process that integrates education, research, practice, governance, and societal contribution. In this context, we facilitate coordination among our academic and administrative units, students, and student communities, while supporting the transformation of the University’s scientific knowledge and research capacity into practical campus applications and societal benefits. We regard our campus as a “living laboratory” where sustainability solutions can be implemented, monitored, evaluated, and further developed.
At the same time, we are aware that we live in the Mediterranean Basin, one of the regions most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, and that this places a particular responsibility on our University. We consider climate-related risks that are becoming increasingly evident in Muğla—such as drought and water scarcity, wildfires, extreme heat, sudden and intense rainfall, and agricultural frost affecting agricultural production—not merely as challenges of the future, but as shared challenges for which we must begin preparing today. We therefore attach great importance to first building awareness, then raising awareness among others, and working together to develop solutions grounded in scientific knowledge.
Our activities are not limited to the boundaries of our campus. We develop partnerships with local governments, public institutions, civil society organizations, the private sector, national and international universities, and research networks. In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, we aim to foster a culture of sustainability in which our students are active stakeholders, interdisciplinary research is encouraged, and scientific knowledge is translated into practice.
Our goal is not merely to create a greener campus, but to be a university that contributes—starting from Muğla—to building a more resilient, informed, and sustainable future.
