Tracing 10,000 Years of History: MSKÜ Conducts Critical Drilling Study in Fethiye Plain
A critical scientific study aimed at illuminating the future was carried out in Fethiye Plain through the collaboration of Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University Sustainable Green Campus Coordination Office and the Department of Geological Engineering. During the drilling campaign, conducted between November 3 and 5, 2025, a 25-meter core sample was successfully extracted from the Fethiye Plain to shed light on the region's past.
Investigating Past Environmental and Climatic Changes
The core samples will undergo detailed micropaleontological (microfossils) and geochemical analyses in the laboratory. Through these analyses, the research team aims to trace the environmental and climatic changes that have occurred in the Fethiye Plain over the last 10,000 years.
Officials emphasized the importance of the study, noting that climate changes can be cyclical and regional. Therefore, region-specific studies are vital for understanding the past in context and making more reliable predictions for the future. Furthermore, understanding past environmental and climate changes allows for a much healthier interpretation of the behavior of ancient societies that inhabited the area.

The project team, including Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sena Akçer Ön, stated that they will continue to search the past to see the future more clearly, guided by the approach: "First environment, climate; then social changes."
